The experience of living with trauma is isolating—you may feel like nobody understands what you’ve been through.

And as a result, you may feel depressed, anxious, lost, lonely, hopeless and/or broken. Do you:

  • Ever feel confused about why you acted the way you did when you were growing up, or why your reactions are what they are in the present?

  • Struggle to get close to people, or does it feel like it’s hard to connect because your experiences are so far outside the norm of what others experienced growing up?

  • Feel like you’re grieving at times, but there’s no apparent loss?

  • Have nightmares, or re-experience things that happened in the past?

  • Carry unresolved anger?

  • Notice a connection between the things that activate you now, and things you experienced when you were a kid?

  • Notice that you get activated easily when you’re around your abuser, or around family members that neglected and/or abused you?

If you answered “yes” to any of the above, you may have experienced something traumatic.

What is trauma?

Trauma is a deeply stressful experience that can cause lasting changes in the brain and nervous system.

As a result, those who have experienced trauma may react more intensely to stressors or triggers that remind them of the traumatic event.

It’s important to find a knowledgeable and experienced therapist that specializes in trauma, and understands how your experiences have affected you.

And if you landed here, then you’ve come to the right place.

Trauma can include a wide range of overwhelming experiences.

At Felt Sense Psychotherapy, our focus is on “developmental trauma”—trauma that occurred repeatedly while we were growing up, often for a prolonged period of time.

This can look like being neglected by our caretakers, experiencing sexual, physical, and emotional abuse, or witnessing any of these kinds of abuse at home, and more.

Trauma Specialties

Rene Gonzalez, LMHC, a trauma therapist nyc

Hi, I’m Rene Gonzalez, LMHC (he/him) an experienced trauma therapist based in NYC.

Over my 10 years in practice as a psychotherapist, I’ve helped traumatized adults reclaim their lives.

Working through trauma can take a long time. Having a warm and trusting relationship with  a psychotherapist sets the stage for long-term healing work.

And I want you to know: This is my life’s work.

My Approach to Trauma Therapy

Trauma therapy can be challenging, especially for those of us who struggle to feel safe in relationships. That’s why I use a gentle, collaborative approach with clear boundaries, and with safety as an early goal.

I also help my clients get in touch with their 'felt sense,' which refers to how we experience emotions in our bodies.

That’s because opportunities to heal emerge when we tune in to ourselves. Many of us have healthy impulses that get buried underneath unhealthy coping skills. I’ll help you unlearn the things that kept you safe as a kid, but create problems for you now.

I use my understanding of neurobiology and attachment to help you understand how trauma impacted your development, and this can really normalize your experiences so you feel less ashamed.

Therapy Types & Modalities

I pull from different modalities, including but not limited to:

  • Internal Family Systems (IFS)

  • Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

  • Attachment Based Therapy

  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

  • Psychodynamic Therapy

  • Somatic Therapy

Shame comes up time and again in my work with clients who have experienced trauma.

When we’re ashamed, we see ourselves as bad, and our instinct is often to look away, and that’s where sex, drugs, and other compulsive behaviors emerge to help us cope.

Unfortunately, these things don’t work, and we end up in a shame spiral that feels inescapable.

Having a therapist who specializes in trauma, and can help you see yourself with self-compassion, can be an essential part of getting your life back on track.

Identifying your values is also important, because self-esteem comes back when our behavior aligns with our core values and beliefs.

Expertise

Trauma can look like a lot of things, and anxiety and depression are big ways in which trauma shows up. I’m skilled at treating anxiety and depression, in addition to PTSD and complex trauma.

I primarily help people who experienced trauma early in their lives.

  • Childhood Sexual Abuse

  • Childhood Emotional Neglect and Abandonment

  • Childhood Trauma

  • Anxiety

  • Depression

  • PTSD

  • Complex trauma

If your primary reason for coming to therapy is substance abuse, eating disorders, personality disorders, OCD, or ADHD, I highly recommend seeing a specialist in those areas. Visit NOCD for OCD providers that take insurance, or Psychology Today to find providers for your specific needs.

If you’re currently in a domestic violence situation, I recommend reaching out to an organization that offers more than just psychotherapy, such as Safe Horizon or CONNECT, for more immediate help.

If you’re currently suicidal or in crisis, I recommend reaching out to 988, or calling 911, or going to your nearest emergency room.

As hard as it is to trust people after we’ve been hurt, the right people—and therapist—can help us heal.

Therapy can be an integral part of turning a new leaf. And while you can’t undo the past, you can have a better future. Find out if I’m the right trauma therapist for you by scheduling a consultation.
